First, we’ll break the list above down into its components. The pieces of the puzzle you need to create and then put together to form your successful website.

Tell your visitors who you are and what you do

This is the information you should put above the fold on your website. Above the fold is what your visitors see without scrolling.

This is vital because people have a very limited attention span, so you need to hook them as quickly as possible.

This means you need to clearly state who you are, what you do and where you do it straight away. No fluff, no messing around, straight in!

For example, a window cleaning business might have this above the fold:

If someone is looking for a window cleaner and they live in that area, straight away they’ll know they’re probably in the right place. This means they’re way more likely to read on.

Gain their trust through demonstrating credibility

Once you’ve got their interest and they’ve decided to read on, you need to gain their trust. You do this with some About text. Explain, again very clearly, who you are and why you’re a good business.

It’s really important to avoid being too self-indulgent here. Your website should focus on your visitor and the things you can do for them. A good way to make sure you do this is to use you, your and you’re at least twice as much as you use we, we’re and our.

Gain credibility by including things like…

  • How you help your customers. (What you can do for them)
  • Highlight some known pain points. (Clearly state the problems you solve)
  • How long you’ve been trading. (An established business is a real trust signal)
  • Awards and nominations you’ve had. (Recognition from your peers is valuable)
  • Accreditations and insurances. (This can separate trustworthy businesses from others)
  • A short testimonial or quote. (Using the experience of your customers is powerful)

Show that you have a solution for their problem(s)

This is done with Products and Services text. This is the thing you sell. It’s what makes you money, so it needs to be compelling.

The key here is to focus on the transformation you bring to your customer’s lives in terms of the problems you’ve highlighted in your About text.

This might sound a little bit strange, but everything provides transformation to people, if you think about it in a certain way. This can be demonstrated even for something as mundane as a drill bit.

No-one buys a drill bit because they want a drill bit, they buy it because they want to put a clock on the wall so they can get the kids to school on time and have a stress-free morning.

That’s so much more compelling!

Another example…

No-one buys an MP3 Player because they want an MP3 Player. They buy it because they want to enjoy their favourite music any time they like.

This also works for services, not just products…

No-one hires an accountant because they want an accountant. They hire one because they want someone to take the stress out of submitting their accurate tax return on time.

Get the idea?

Think how you can position your products and services in a way that shows transformation. It will have a huge impact on the success of your website.

As well as talking about your products and services in the way explained above, here are some other things you can include…

  • Specific places that you cover. (So that people know if they are in the correct location)
  • When your services are available. (Your working hours or opening hours)
  • Any additional services you provide. (Anything else you can offer your customers)
  • Flexible options you offer like discounts. (To make your services look even more attractive)

Tell them what to do next to buy from you

Your visitors might be really impressed with your business and your amazing products and services, but you should never assume they will know what to do next.

So, you should tell them how to move things forward. You do this with a Call to Action (CTA).

What do you want your visitors to do? Call you, send you an email, visit your store, download your brochure? Whatever it is, add it to your website as a CTA.

Here are some examples:

Adding a clear CTA like this will result in a lot more people taking the next step which will move them closer to becoming your customer.

To make your CTA even more effective, add some urgency by using the word ‘now’ or ‘today’. Not only are you telling them what to do, you’re also telling them when to do it.

Give them a way to get in touch with you

Finally, you need to give them that all important contact information.

When you add contact details to your website, think about your audience. How do they like to communicate?

Under 25s won’t want to call you, they hate speaking on the phone. So, instead of a landline number add an email contact form or even a mobile number and invite them to text you.

Older people still prefer to pick up the phone and have a conversation. In this example, a landline telephone number will be much more effective.

Make sure your contact information supports your CTA, if relevant. For example, if you want people to visit your store, not having your street address on your website won’t lead to a stampede of people visiting you.

So, now you have all the content you need to add to your website that will make it successful.

There are 3 more things we need to cover…

  • Choosing a great domain name
  • Creating your actual website
  • Making sure you get loads of visitors

Choosing a great domain name

A domain name is the bit that starts with www . Every website needs a domain name.

The simple answer to this is, use your business name. There are loads of TLDs available (TLD is Top Level Domain. Examples of a TLD are .com, .co.uk, .net).

So, if yourbusinessname.com or yourbusinessname.co.uk are already taken, try others.

  • yourbusinessname.co
  • yourbusinessname.uk
  • yourbusinessname.online

If you still can’t find a domain name that’s available, try adding something that’s specific to your business, such as your location or business type.

For example:

  • yourbusinessnameleeds.com
  • yourbusinessnameplumbing.net

Just make sure you keep your domain name relatively short. Less than 25 characters is ideal to make sure it’s memorable.

Once you’ve chosen your domain name, you have everything you need to create your successful website.

Creating your website

You basically have 2 options:

  • Hire a professional Website Designer
  • Do it yourself with a Website Builder

Let’s go into a bit more detail for both of them…

Hiring a professional Website Designer

The emphasis here is on ‘Professional’, There are a lot of people out there that claim they are web designers. But, it’s not just about creating some nice looking pages. You also need to make sure:

  • Your website is mobile device optimised. (More people access the internet on mobile that traditional devices)
  • You get some Search Engine Optimisation. (Like we said, if no-one finds your website, it’s effectively useless)
  • You get ongoing support when you need it. (Your website should be constantly evolving without costing you the earth)

The easiest way to find a good Web Designer is to research online. It’s almost impossible to deliver a bad service without getting negative reviews. So, find some reputable local Web Designers online. Or you could ask other business owners if they can recommend theirs.

Now on to cost…

To create a simple, but effctive website, you shouldn’t be paying more than £500 at the absolute maximum. More like £200-£300. Remember, all you need is a website that features the stuff we went through above.

Don’t be conned into spending more on your Web Designers super-duper package. Unless there’s a really strong reason for it, it’s just not necessary. (For now at least).

You should also be prepared to pay a small monthly fee for your Website Hosting. Like a domain name, every website needs this. It’s where the files are located that make up your website, so they can be displayed on people’s computers or mobile devices.

You shouldn’t pay more than £10 a month for this.

Once you’ve found your Web Designer, you just need to give the content you’ve created to them and they’ll add it to the website they’ll design and create it for you.

Do it yourself with a Website Builder

In our opinion, this is the quickest and easiest way to launch your successful website. Plus, if you’ve already created your content, this is super easy.

This is how a website builder typically works…

  • You choose a template to use as the basis of your website
  • You add all your content to the template you’ve chosen
  • You choose the domain name you want to use
  • You launch your website live to the internet

Some of the benefits of using a Website Builder include…

  • You won’t pay an up-front fee for the creating of your website
  • You’ll be able to login and make changes yourself anytime
  • You’ll get ongoing support from your chosen supplier

There are loads to choose from. Again, do a simple Google search to find some options.

The cost for a Website Builder is usually around £10 a month and you’ll get everything you need including your Website Hosting. Plus, as stated above, you shouldn’t pay anything upfront to create your website.

Here’s a realistic comparison between a Web Designer and a Website Builder for first year cost…

  • Web Designer: £300 for your website + £120 (£10 a month for hosting) = £420
  • Website Builder: £0 for your website + £120 (£10 a month for hosting) = £120

In fact, most Website Builders offer a free version for you to try, so it might cost you £0 for the first year.

Now you’ve decided how you’ll actually create your website, there’s the really important part.

How to get visitors to your website

I’ve already stated a couple of times, without this, your effort is for nothing and your website won’t help your business in any way.

So, how do you get visitors to your website?

Here’s our top 3 ways. (Plus, they’re all totally free).

Tell Google you have a website

Don’t wait for Google to realise you have a website. Sign up to Google Search Console. You submit some basic information about your website and in return, Google gives you a snippet of code to add to your website.

You either need to give this code to your Web Designer or add it using your Website Builder. Either way, it’s really easy to do and it can make a big difference to the exposure you get on Google.

Once you’ve added the snippet, Google will start to consider showing your website in search results.

Sign up to Google MyBusiness

This is another free tool from Google and it’s incredibly powerful. The exposure it can give to your business and website can be huge, especially if you work in a local area.

Plus, only around 10-15% of businesses have claimed their Google MyBusiness listing. This is a really effective way to not only get exposure for your business, but also to beat your competition.

It’s really easy to sign up. You enter information about your business and then Google will send you a postcard with a verification code which you need to use to verify your business. Once you’ve done that you’ll show up in 2 places on Google.

  • On the map search, when people search for a business of your type in your location
  • On the right hand side of Google, when people search for your business name

This is a really effective way of getting exposure for your website in Google searches.

If you’re a local business that serves a specific geographic area, you should look for the places that you can list your website for free.

So, do a Google search for your business type in your area and see what comes up. You’ll usually see well known things like; Yell.com, Yelp, Thomson Local and Checkatrade (if you’re a tradesperson). Plus, you’ll probably see local business directories and probably directories for specific industries.
